At A & Z Storage, we take every precaution to maintain a clean and secure environment for your stored items. We regularly place rodent control products around the facility and monitor for signs of pests. However, because we’re located in a field and subject to Michigan’s unpredictable storms, occasional water intrusion or rodent activity can occur.
While we do our part, it’s important that you do yours too!
Follow these tips to protect your belongings:
STORAGE SAFETY CHECKLIST
1. Use Pallets or Shelving
• Keep all items off the ground to protect against moisture from heavy rains or floor condensation.
2. Choose Plastic Bins Instead of Cardboard Boxes
• Plastic is moisture- and pest-resistant, unlike cardboard which absorbs water and attracts rodents.
3. Seal All Containers Tightly
• Use airtight bins and vacuum-seal bags for clothing, linens, and important papers.
4. Add Moisture Absorbers
• Place Damp Rid, baking soda, or silica gel packs inside your bins to help prevent mold and mildew.
5. Use Natural Rodent Deterrents
• Dryer sheets, Irish Spring soap, or peppermint oil can help keep mice away from your unit.
6. Cover Furniture with Breathable Materials
• Use cotton or canvas covers (not plastic) to avoid trapping moisture.
7. Clean Everything Before Storing
• Avoid storing food or crumbs. Clean appliances and furniture to avoid attracting pests.
8. Leave Space for Airflow
• Don’t stack items wall-to-wall. Leave small gaps for air circulation and ease of access.
9. Visit Your Unit Regularly
• Check on your items monthly to catch any issues early.
10. Use Cedar Blocks or Mothballs as Extra Protection
• Great for clothing and linens—just don’t place directly on items to avoid staining.
